Snowgirl arrived at Central Square Theater as part of the mission of the Nora Theatre Company’s “That’s What She Said” program with 30 pages of text that were mostly disjointed scenes about a 16 year old girl named Shannon and Snowgirl, her alter ego/imaginary friend/shadow-self. After almost a year of meetings, in person workshops, and countless rewrites, a one act version of Snowgirl was born and peformed at Central Square Theater. Using music and movement, in addition to text, I worked with a team of artists to tell a story familiar to so many women and femmes; a story of having to choose between your truer, more wild self and the self that society wants you to be. Snowgirl exists in a sort of liminal space between our contemporary reality, the world of folktales, and an unknown space where our other self, our “Specs” as they’re called in the play go to whither away for all eternity.
